]]> Sun Oct 18 2009 Locos on the West Yorkshire "Wessy" http://55z.fotopic.net/c1766909.html When 47443 North Eastern arrived at the Liverpool Lime Street buffer stops with the 1M48 18:07 Newcastle-Liverpool on the evening of 20th January 1991, in doing so she brought about a dramatic change. For the first time in over 145 years the West Yorkshire "Wessy" - the line between L&NWR Junction at Ravensthorpe and Leeds - was left bereft of loco-hauled trains. With freight trains long since diverted via the old L & Y route through Healey Mills and Wakefield Kirkgate the Newcastle to Liverpool trains were the last diagrammed loco-hauled passenger trains to ply their trade, on this the busiest of the Trans-Pennine routes. Immediately after the cessation there was a long barren spell, but over the years, especially since privatisation some workings have returned to the route, but these are by no means regular occurances. Today the only loco-hauled trains the route sees are the occasional charter train, (although most of these are diverted over the less busy L&Y route via Wakefield), Network Rail Test Trains or route learners and the occasional loco movement between L&NWR Crewe and Midland Road for Freightliner. This book does not intend to provide a definitive record of these workings, merely just my own personal pictorial record of a selection of workings captured over the last decade or so at various locations along the route. In the second image I have removed Vicki Pollard and her family who were walking down the road without a care in the world! Also removed are the HGV going under the viaduct, the parked car and the Pizzeria sign off the side of the restaurant/Take-Away. I could have gone further and removed the palisade fencing and power pylons but if truth be told I got bored ! Also photoshop is not my strongpoint !! The next three images are various conversions to Black & White and Sepia to add the "Olde Worldie" appearance - Just a bit of fun really - Happy Birthday to Me!! Any sort of train down the Monk Bretton other than the twice weekly sand is rare but top and tail tractors - MASSIVE. Goosed by the sun both at Walton and later by Mr Roses pet cloud at Notton where it got three of us! After stumping up £30 per ticket for an "advance entry photography" ticket, my collegues and I all thought a little agreived (polite speak for ripped off!!). The advance ticket was supposed to allow entrance from 08:00. We arrived before this time and joined the queue awaiting access. After following the signs for "prepaid tickests only" we were still made to queue again (and had our tickets checked twice - why??) and did not manage to get out of the car till 08:30. Also the general public were not supposed to be allowed access till 10:00 and they were actually allowed in at 09:00, allowing us only 30 mins before being mobbed by the "I have paid my money i'll stand where I like I don't care if you are taking photos brigade". Not exactly fair when you have actually paid double what they did. (though admittadly this was not their fault) Memories of the NRM Railfest gig of a few years ago. Add this to some questionable positioning of locos making photography almost pointless- Why leave five visiting DRS locos all coupled together in a line for one example? (The reason given for this was to protect the public from the pits - only two of the five locos were actually positiojned over a pit!) - one cannot be left feeling at the very least the event could have been organised a little better. HDR Imagery consists of "blending & Tone Mapping" a series of images shot at varying exposures. The Camera - unlike the human eye - will expose an image based on the brightest part/the majority of the frame, which on bright days can result in a perfectly exposed subject and a bleached out shy (normally the case resulting in lack of sky colour or cloud detail) or if the sky is the prominent factor in the image, a perfectly exposed sky (resulting an a dark subject matter image). The Way HDR works is to blend an image 1 or two stops under exposed (dark subject - correct sky) with a 1 or 2 stops over exposed (good shadow detail - no sky detail/bleached out) with a third image that the camera judges to be exposed correctly (the camera's best guess). After the three images are combined and a tone mapping matrix is applied the results can be a very realistic to the eye image, or depending on how the matrix is applied an almost "oil painting" like effect. The Way HDR works is to blend an image 1 or two stops under exposed (dark subject - correct sky) with a 1 or 2 stops over exposed (good shadow detail - no sky detail/bleached out) with a third image that the camera judges to be exposed correctly (the camera's best guess). After the three images are combined and a tone mapping matrix is applied the results can be a very realistic to the eye image, or depending on how the matrix is applied an almost "oil painting" like effect. Hours of good clean fun!!
